Tesla India has made a strategic move signaling to enter the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market. After the meeting in Washington between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Prime Miniter Narendra Modi about space exploration, mobility, and technology. Tesla has started hiring for multiple roles on LinkedIn.

The positions span various categories like vehicle service, sales, customer support, and business operations. Crucial positions like Store Manager and Delivery Operations Specialist, it is intended that Tesla is interested in opening physical stores. Tesla already has a branch in Pune and many of their suppliers are based out of the state. Hence, setting up in India’s financial hub, Mumbai is a natural choice for market expansion.

Tesla India renewed focus on the Indian market

After the meeting with PM Modi, Tesla India is renewing interest in the Indian market again. Tesla has tried to enter the EV market of India but faced several challenges like high import duties. Previously, Elon Musk has also highlighted the tariff barrier. However, recently there have been changes in policy including import tax reduction on electric vehicles. This is for those companies who are committing investments in local manufacturing. Therefore, the tariff reduction and other factors encouraged Tesla to enter the EV market in India. The potential hirings are based on Mumbai and Delhi which signals the retail presence in these cities.

India’s electric vehicle market is rapidly growing. In 2025, it is projected that more electric vehicles will be launched rather than petrol/diesel ones. EV sales are expected to double by 4% as India paces towards sustainability. Already electric two-wheeler vehicles are popular in the Indian market and now four-wheelers as well.  Tesla’s entry will significantly impact the rapidly growing sector. Prominent players like Mahindra, Tata Motors, and Hyundai are ruling the market and Tesla’s presence will stimulate the competition.
