Teachers are those individuals who shape the minds and futures of students. We all have that one who changed our thought process, showed us ways to achieve our dreams, or just made a boring subject more interesting. The Indian education system has evolved over the years and one of the biggest contributors to this evolution is our female teachers.

India is one of the largest education providers in the world. There are nearly 14+ lakh schools in India with over 98 lakh teachers and more than 24 crore students. These numbers vary from different socio-economic backgrounds, from the foundational level to the secondary level.

According to the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+), women teachers account for up to 53.3% of the total teaching workforce in 2023-24, surpassing male presence in the education system. A spike has been noted in the last five years. The percentage was around 49.98% in 2018-19.

In private institutions, out of the total percentage, 65% accounts for women teachers whereas only 35% accounts for male teachers. Even a steep increase of 48% of female teachers in government schools is seen as well. This increment in the rise of female preference indicates the growth of women in the teaching profession, especially in the private education sector.

In India, there are certain states that represent a high ratio of female teachers. Like in Kerala has 78% and Tamil Nadu has 67% women teachers in their government schools. Delhi also accounts 61% of women as teachers in the schools.

The increasing number of female presence in the teaching sector contributing to positive developments, making the schools more balanced and inclusive environment for education. Encouraging young girls to follow the path of education and take it as a professional career path. The rise in education system portrays the progress towards equality and  success across all levels of education.
