Flipkart appoints Dunzo CEO and Co-founder, Kabeer Biswas to lead its quick commerce platform, Minutes. In India, quick commerce has significantly increased in metropolitan cities. Before Blinkit and Zepto, there was Dunzo, founded in 2014, which revolutionized quick delivery of groceries and other essentials by connecting consumers to nearby stores. Later, the company became operational nationwide.
Downfall of Dunzo
Dunzo started its operation in Bangalore initially. Reliance Retail made a whopping investment of $200 million in the start-up in 2022. Furthermore, this made Reliance the largest shareholder of the company. However, in the last few years, the company faced many financial constraints and even failed to pay the employees for more than 18 months.
Biswas approached many companies, like Tata Groups, Swiggy, and others, to invest in the company but was unable to secure one. After that, the co-founders of Dunzo, Mukund Jha, Dalvir Suri, and Ankur Agarwal, exited the company. Lastly, Kabeer Biswas also stepped down from his position at Dunzo.
With the heavily dominated sector of quick commerce by Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart, Dunzo failed to secure its growth.
Flipkart Minutes entry in the quick commerce
The quick commerce sector in India is set to rise up to $20 billion by 2026. Flipkart Minutes is also joining the race among the quick delivery giants of India. Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, Zepto, and BigBasket are the big players who are dominating the quick commerce sector of India.
Last year, Minutes by Flipkart was launched. Flipkart appoints Dunzo CEO Kabeer Biswas who will head the strategies and operations of the Flipkart Minutes. With his previous experience in Dunzo, his role will include deploying dark stores and expertise in the platform in offering high-value products like laptops, PCs, mobiles, and more.
Amazon has also launched its pilot programs for a similar delivery service. Quick commerce has notably struggled to stand out globally, but the scenario is different in India. The country’s population in metropolitan cities and tier-two cities is rapidly rising. This is one of the reasons for the rapid increase in demand for quick delivery at the doorstep, and the timeframe for delivery is decreasing to within 10–15 minutes, which seems like a boon to working professionals. Therefore, in recent years, quick commerce has escalated, and these platforms have become a part of daily life.
